A natural deodorant ingredient list reads like a chemistry final you didn't study for, and plenty of brands are counting on that — the less you understand, the less you ask. This is the opposite: a plain-language glossary of the natural deodorant ingredients that actually do the work, what each one is, and why it earned its spot. No jargon without a translation.
The odor actives
Zinc (as zinc oxide and zinc chloride hydroxide) — The core odor worker in BioShield™. Zinc ions help convert the smelly molecules bacteria produce into larger, non-volatile compounds that can't reach your nose, and reduce the bacterial activity that creates them. This is the mechanism behind "eliminates odor at the source." Zinc oxide also has mild skin-soothing properties.
Triethyl citrate (TEC) — A citric-acid-derived ester that helps control odor enzymatically: it supports the breakdown of odor precursors before they fully develop into smell. Gentle and widely used in natural formulations.
Methylheptylglycerin — A deodorizing and skin-conditioning ingredient. It contributes to odor control while helping keep the formula gentle on skin — part of how a formula stays effective without being harsh.
Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) — The lead botanical in Tea Tree. Its active compound, terpinen-4-ol, has documented antimicrobial activity against odor-contributing bacteria.
The supporting cast
Magnesium (magnesium hydroxide) — Supports skin compatibility and the conditions the odor system works best in. It's the variable that distinguishes the magnesium-enhanced MAX from the magnesium-free SENSITIVE. It's a supporting ingredient, not the primary odor active.
Bamboo silica — A naturally-derived powder that absorbs moisture and improves the feel of the application, without clogging pores. Helps manage wetness without trying to block your sweat glands.
Bisabolol — A skin-soothing compound (naturally found in chamomile) included for comfort and tolerance.
What you won't find
- Aluminum — none, in any Zaffré formula. That's an antiperspirant active; Zaffré is a deodorant that eliminates odor at the source instead of blocking sweat.
- Baking soda — none in the BioShield™ formulas (MAX, SENSITIVE); it's the leading cause of natural-deodorant irritation, so it's engineered out.
- Alcohol, propylene glycol — not used as a base.
Why this matters
An ingredient list isn't decoration — every component should earn its place. The short version of Zaffré's formulation philosophy is exactly that: each ingredient does a specific job, nothing's there for marketing, and the things known to irritate skin (aluminum, baking soda) are deliberately left out. If you ever want to know what a specific ingredient is doing, that's the test to apply to any deodorant: can the brand tell you what each line does, and why it's there?
