You know the drawer. Four sticks in it, three barely used. The one that gave you a rash by day two. The one that worked until it didn't. The one whose label told you to push through a "detox period," as if raw skin were a stage of progress.
None of that was your fault. Most natural deodorants work by putting an alkaline powder on your skin and letting your sweat dissolve it. How much is in there, and how fast it releases, decides whether that's comfortable or not. When that's the lever, some people are always going to lose.
Sensitive doesn't pull that lever at all.
The part nobody explains
Baking soda and magnesium hydroxide are both alkaline, and both neutralize the acids that carry the smell. The difference isn't pH. A saturated solution of magnesium hydroxide actually reaches a higher pH than one of baking soda.
The difference is how fast they arrive. Baking soda dissolves readily, so in sweat it delivers essentially all of its alkalinity at once. Magnesium hydroxide barely dissolves, so it sits as a reservoir and releases only as acid shows up, then stops. That's why it's the gentler of the two, and it's the same reason it's the base used in antacids.
Sensitive skips both. Triethyl citrate is a plant-derived ester, and the same bacterial enzymes that turn sweat into odor also split it. Splitting it releases citric acid right at the surface, which slows those enzymes down. It renews itself: as your skin buffers the acid back up, more of the ester breaks down and the cycle starts again.
The gentler route turns out to be the one that works further upstream. Less odor gets made in the first place, using your skin's own chemistry. Zinc chloride hydroxide runs alongside it and traps whatever forms anyway.
